I Love Drawing, But I’m Not an Artist

There’s a magical moment when your hand touches a pen or a brush—a moment that doesn’t require a degree, a title, or even recognition to be called art. For me, drawing isn’t just a passing hobby; it’s a space where I can breathe freely, a language that allows me to say what words often can’t.

I may not be a professional artist. I don’t have a gallery that people visit or pieces that are bought and sold. But I do have a heart that finds comfort in drawing, and a soul that sees it as a window to peace. That, to me, is the beauty of it all: loving drawing without needing to be called an “artist.”

Art Changes the Way You See the World

As Pablo Picasso once said:

“Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once we grow up.”

This quote perfectly describes my relationship with drawing. As children, we scribble freely, coloring with limitless imagination. But as we grow older, the voices start chasing us: “That’s not good enough,” “That doesn’t look right.” The truth, however, is that art isn’t about grades or perfection—it’s about reflection.

Drawing isn’t just about lines and colors. It’s about seeing things differently. When I sketch a flower, I notice the curve of its petals, the subtle shifts in color, the way light creates shadows. Suddenly, the world feels richer, deeper, and more alive.

Why I Love Drawing

Drawing is freedom for me. It’s like walking down a quiet path with no noise, just me and my thoughts. It helps me release emotions—joy, sadness, nostalgia, or even boredom. The very first line I put on paper feels like opening a door into myself, and somehow, colors always know how to heal me.

As Kahlil Gibran beautifully wrote:

“Art is a step from what is obvious and well-known toward what is arcane and concealed.”

Every drawing, even the simplest one, carries a part of me that words could never capture.

Not Being “An Artist” Is Okay

Many people believe that if you draw, you must be an artist. I disagree. To me, art doesn’t belong only to professionals. It belongs to anyone who feels something while creating.

It’s the same as someone writing in their journal without being a poet, or someone singing in the rain without being a singer. Art isn’t a title—it’s a feeling.

“Art is freedom.” – Vincent van Gogh

Drawing Feels Like a Friend

When life feels overwhelming, I open my sketchbook and draw. I don’t care how the final result looks; the process is what matters. Drawing is like talking to a loyal friend who never judges and never lets me down.

It has taught me patience. It’s shown me that mistakes aren’t failures—they’re part of the journey. A crooked line or a color spilling outside the border often makes the final piece more beautiful than I imagined.

Quotes That Inspire Me About Art

  • “Art is not made for anybody and is, at the same time, for everybody.” – Piet Mondrian

  • “When I draw, I feel as if I’m living twice.” – Henri Matisse

  • “Art washes away from the soul the dust of everyday life.” – Pablo Picasso

  • “A drawing is simply a line going for a walk.” – Paul Klee

  • “Painting is silent poetry.” – Horace

The Silent Language of Drawing

Have you ever tried drawing a feeling instead of writing it down?
When words fail, colors become sentences, and lines turn into unspoken poetry. You don’t need to explain—just look, and the meaning is there.

That’s why I share my drawings, even if they’re not perfect. Sometimes, they speak for me. And sometimes, they speak for others too.

Drawing Teaches Me About Myself

Every piece I draw feels like a mirror, reflecting something within me. Sometimes I realize I’m sadder than I thought, or stronger than I believed.

Drawing is a way of listening to myself, a reminder that my emotions deserve to be seen—even if only by me.

Closing Thoughts

I love drawing, but I’m not an artist. And honestly, love matters more than perfection. The true meaning of art isn’t measured by the number of pieces you’ve made or the recognition you receive—it’s found in those small moments when art brings you peace and quiet joy.

For me, drawing is an inner journey. It doesn’t need an audience. It doesn’t need a title. All it takes is the simple act of holding a pen or a brush and letting myself breathe freely.

So maybe I’m not an “artist” in the eyes of the world. But in my own world, I am—and that’s more than enough.
